Heyyy everybody!

I hope the first week of classes went fairly well for everyone!

I know this is short notice, but tomorrow morning at 10am we are meeting at the church to help set up tables and chairs and whatever else is needed for the lunch after the PC Sunday service at First Pres. The more people we have, the quicker it will go. We'll start at 10am and end somewhere around 11:30 (or earlier, like I said, if we have more people). If you just want to roll out of bed and show up, we would be perfectly fine with that! And if anyone needs/wants a ride, I will be leaving the Smyth parking lot just before 10am. Thanks for all your help!

Helloooo fellow PSAers!

I hope everyone had an amazing summer break! I know mine was, but maybe not quite long enough. Nevertheless, I am excited to be back and pumped about our year for PSA! We have some pretty awesome things we're planning, if I do say so myself. The first of which, is a ice cream party TOMORROW in front of NEVILLE at 8PM! I mean, who honestly doesn't want some free ice cream? So come and get it! The rest of the officers and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Gardening on Earth Day

This Thursday is Earth Day! In celebration, SVS and SEE are co-hosting a gardening day at the PC garden (near the soccer field). We will be out there from 2-6. You can come for as long or short a period of time as you want. It will be a great way to work off some of your pre-finals stress by digging and planting! Bring your friends!!!

Welcome back everyone!

Some of you may have heard rumors about a PSA pancake dinner tonight since First Pres isn't having dinner again. After some long debate, however, we have decided to cancel PSA for the evening since everyone seems to be EXTREMELY busy! Sorry about this sad news...

HOWEVER, I (Sarah)and hopefully some other amazing PSA people will be eating dinner in GDH around 6 tonight if anyone's interested in still having some fellowship with PSA people!

Next week we will be back on schedule with a possible visit from the wonderful Dr. Bryant discussing the hot topic of women in the Bible.

Worship, Elections, and YAV

Welcome back retreaters! And to the rest of you, we really missed you!

First off, don't forget about the contemporary worship service tonight at 7 pm at First Pres in the fellowship hall. The service will be followed with some tasty treats. You all should come!

Also, this week at PSA we will be having officer elections for next year. PLEASE COME AND VOTE!!!!! Your opinions are highly valued and really do count! I promise we don't use an electoral college system.

And one final note, this weekend (March 26-27) the YAV site in Atlanta is hosting an open house overnight complete with discussion, fun, a service project, and FREE food and housing. If any of you are even slightly interested in doing YAV next year or even in a few years, this would be a great chance to learn about the YAV experience. Lee Catoe and Sarah Bellacicco will be going down Friday afternoon and coming back Saturday by 2 pm. If anyone wants to carpool email Sarah at sdbellaci. Attached is more info.

St. Patty's Day and RETREAT!!!!

Happy Pi Day!!! (Get it, 3.14...) :)

Anyways, as the subject line suggests, we have an exciting week ahead of us! This Wednesday is St. Patrick's Day. So, in honor of the numerous red-heads and other Irish folk in PSA, naturally we are going to celebrate! Come to First Pres for some tasty treats and exciting games. And don't forgot to wear green!!!

Also, as many of you have heard, next weekend (March 19-21) is our PSA retreat!!! We will be spending a weekend at Jen's house in Montreat complete with My Father's Pizza (for all you Montreaters), a tacky prom, good discussion, relaxation, and much, much more!! We will be leaving around 4 pm on Friday and returning midday on Sunday. The cost of the weekend is only $5!!!! Bring friends even if they haven't experienced the greatness of PSA before. All are welcome! If you can come, please RSVP to Sarah (sdbellaci) or join the facebook group (can be found on Sarah Bellacicco or Kathleen Lifsey's facebook wall if you're not already invited). Also, let us know if you can drive so that we can work out carpool options.

Here are the instructions for registering for our Relay for Life team. We are teaming up with the Office of Religious Life this year and our cancer is Ovarian Cancer. Let me (schall) or Lee Catoe (locatoe) if you have any questions.

1. Go to www.relayforlife.org/laurenssc
2. Click "Sign Up"
3. Click "Join a Team"
4. Enter Team Name - Presbyterian Blue Hose, then click "Search for Team", and when you see our team click "Join Team" on the right
5. Choose the Early Bird Participant option so you do not have to pay a fee
6.Enter Your personal fundraising goal as $50, then click next step
7. Click returning or new user (whichever applies) and follow the directions **Don't forget your t-shirt size**
8. Agree to the waiver

Hey everyone!
I know you all missed this email last week so I tried my hardest not to forget to send it this week!
Following our discussion last Wednesday about Haiti, the other officers and I discussed wanting to become more active in Haiti relief. For that reason, this week we are going to be putting together the first aid/care kits that First Pres is collecting to send down to Haiti. We'll go ahead and buy all the supplies to put them together but if you have a few bucks you want to contribute, bring the money to the meeting tomorrow.
We'll also be debriefing about this past weekend at winter conference. Whether you went to Winter Conference or not, its sure to be a good conversation that everyone can participate in.

It's almost Wednesday!!!

Welcome back everyone!!!

Tomorrow's the big day - time for PSA!!! We'll be meeting at 5:30 on the steps of Neville to walk over to First Pres for dinner. After dinner we're going to have some catch-up time, play some games, talk about this semester, and talk about a few amazing retreats that are coming up.

The first of these retreats is Winter Conference, a retreat in Montreat for all of PC! It's a blast! Really, its my favorite time of year! It is the weekend of January 22-24. It costs $30 to attend which covers 2 nights of plush accommodations at the Assembly Inn, delicious meals (also at the Inn), and an awesome t-shirt. The conference itself is based on the theme "In the beginning..." and will cover the importance of creation. We will also meet in small groups as well as have free time in Montreat on Saturday afternoon and a talent show on Saturday evening (get your acts ready!). We will have registration forms at PSA tomorrow. You can bring your money then or bring it to Lucy in the Religious Life office sometime before the conference.

Tonight - Christmas Service and Study Space

Happy Reading Day Everyone!

Today is full of many great opportunities!

From 6 pm until midnight tonight the PSA room (and building it's in) at First Pres will be open for studying! Caffeine and snacks will be provided as well as friendly faces to encourage you through the hours of studying. Come by anytime!

Also, at 6:30 pm tonight in Edmunds is the Christmas Candlelight Service. This is personally my favorite service of the semester. We read the Christmas story, sing Christmas carols, and end the service out on the lawn, holding candles and singing. It's a very worshipful experience and a good study break! Plus, there will be gingerbread cookies and apple cider in the Administration building right afterwards!

So, come one, come all to the Christmas service at 6:30 and then head over to First Pres for a great studying atmosphere!

Today is my favorite PSA day. It's the day we go caroling at the Presbyterian Home! The residents will sincerely tell you... this is the HIGHLIGHT of their Christmas! So don't let them down!

Meet on the steps of Neville at 5:45!! No prior experience singing needed, just your enthusiasm, or your willingness.

We'll be back before 7:00 for the Holiday Bowl. Which, by the way is my other personal favorite... Charlie Brown & The Grinch on the PC lawn. It's magical.

Happy "Dead" Week!

Hey there PSAers!

Long time no see! But don't worry, we'll get to hang out A LOT this week!

First off, on WEDNESDAY we will be back to our normal Wednesday night routine - meet at 5:30 on the steps of Neville, walk over, eat delicious food, and hear words of wisdom from the wonderful Dr. McGehe!!!

Then, on FRIDAY at 9 pm in Townhouse B4, Ellison is hosting a Tacky Christmas Party complete with hot chocolate and other surprises! You and anyone you can drag along with you are invited as long as you wear a tacky Christmas outfit!

Also, on SUNDAY we will be continuing our annual tradition of Christmas Caroling at Presbyterian Home. We will be meeting at 5:45 to carpool over. There will also be the Holiday Bowl hosted by the Bluefish right afterwards at 7 which includes watching wonderful Christmas movies, drinking hot chocolate, and eating Christmas cookies.

But wait there's more!!! On MONDAY from 5 pm until midnight the CLC building at First Pres will be open for studying (and maybe a bit of fun) complete with tons of caffeine, snacks, and PSA people! How could it get any better???

Ok I'll stop for now but make sure and write all of this down. We will be taking attendance (ok maybe not...but you should still come).

As some of you may have heard, this Saturday is youth day, a gathering of middle- and high-schoolers from all over! There will be around 650 students here! The Religious Life office with the help of Celtic Cross and Bluefish are putting on Youth Day but could always use more help! So if you are interested in hanging out with some amazing youth, playing games, singing, doing energizers, etc., etc. email Beth Olker at egolker@presby.edu. We could use help anytime from 8 till 1 on Saturday, but especially from 10:45-12. At that time we will be doing the Amazing Race, a huge scavenger hunt! It'll be a blast!!!
So again, let Beth know or show up at MSY at 8 (to help with registration and opening games) or 10:45 (for the amazing race).

Wonderful Wednesdays!

Howdy PSAers!

Thanks for all of your participation with Project Life last week! Around 200 people came to the dinner and 132 people got typed and put on the registry on Thursday!!

This Wednesday will again be something slightly different. We are having a guest speaker who worked with YAV (Young Adult Volunteers sponsored by the PCUSA) in Kenya for a year. She is coming to share her experiences and talk about what an amazing opportunity YAV is. We are hoping other students outside of PSA may come as well so we are going to meet on campus in Chapman (Jacobs 208) to have pizza and talk about Kenya and YAV. YAV really is an amazing way to serve somewhere around the world after college so spread the word and get people to come. I mean its free pizza and cool stories about Kenya! Bring your friends!

So again, we will be meeting in Chapman (not at First Pres) at 5:30 on Wednesday for Pizza and a guest speaker.

Wednesday - Project Life!

Ok I know that was random but humor me...

Don't forget that this Wednesday we will not be having our normal meeting because of the Project Life Spaghetti Dinner beginning at 5:30 in MSY. The Dinner is all you can eat spaghetti, salad, and bread with an amazing array of desserts! The dinner is held every year to support the Bone Marrow Registry Drive that will be held the whole day on Thursday in front of Springs. Please come out and support this effort to get people on the national bone marrow registry which will be checked when someone needs a bone marrow transplant. So basically it's a way to possibly save a life. That's a very quick summary but come to the dinner and everything will be explained!

The tickets for the dinner will be sold tomorrow in Springs and GDH from 11-1. You can also buy them at the door.
The tickets are $5 for the dinner, $8 for an awesome t-shirt, or $10 for both!

If you are interested in helping with the dinner, we could use people from 3-5 in MSY tomorrow to set-up or afterwards to help clean-up.

Halloween Carnival!

Today is the annual Thornwell Halloween Carnival in front of Springs. The carnival starts at 4 and runs till 6. PSA will have their own booth, and we will be playing Doughnuts on a String! If you would like like join FPC as an affiliate member and you did NOT fill out a purple form at the lunch last week, please shoot me an email! Remember that affiliate membership means that you KEEP your membership at your home church, but you declare FPC as your official home-away-from-home church. Montreat College Conference!

One Last Thing! Lucy from the Office of Religious Life has asked us to send out an email about College Conference.

January 2nd - 5th, 2010

PC is taking a group up to Montreat for the College Conference this year. We have a house and we will be cooking our meals together. There are a limited number of spots available so it will be first come first serve. The cost for this conference is $120 per person. It includes conference fee, lodging, and meals. I know this is a little steep. The $120 covers the conference fee and lodging, PC will pick up the cost of the meals. Payment is due by Thanksgiving, but if you are interested in going let me (Lucy Strong - lc_strong@presby.edu) know as soon as possible. Also if you want to hear more, just shoot me an email.

This week is PC One, a program sponsored by the bluefish in an attempt to bring the various religious organizations on campus together. That means, Wednesday night they will be sponsoring a religious organization joint movie night! The movie "Saved" will begin at 7:45 pm on Wednesday on the front steps of Neville (or in Whitelaw Auditorium if its raining). There will be popcorn served!

We want to support this effort SO we will NOT be meeting at our normal time on Wednesday. Instead, we will have a pre-party of just PSA folks at Springs where we can gather around 7 pm to eat dinner/ice cream together (I have tons of bonus bucks if you need any!) and then we'll head over to the movie.

If you can, come to dinner or the movie or both!! You may want to bring blankets and warm clothes if its cold.

ALSO: For all interested in becoming an affiliate member at First Presbyterian Church, there will be an informational meeting on Wednesday from 11:30-1:30 at the round booth in Springs. You can drop-by whenever you have time during that period, grab lunch, and hit up Pastor Wain Wesbury with any questions you might have.

Ok, so that was a lot of information! Here's the run down for Wednesday:
11:30-1:30 - Lunch with Wain in Springs
7:00 - Dinner with PSA folks in Springs

PSA Dessert Potluck!

Calling all PSAers and fellow lovers of dessert!

Tomorrow night (Sunday) beginning at 8pm we will be having a dessert potluck at Townhouse B5. According to the list we passed around on Wednesday night, people will be bringing tons of "amazing", "delicious", "chocolatey", and otherwise unnamed desserts so its sure to be a blast!

But wait there's more! We will be playing games and possibly even studying up a bit on the life of our good friend Calvin so that we'll be prepared for the Calvin Trivia at First Pres next Wednesday.

So, if you can, bring a dessert or drinks to share (soda, juice, etc). If you really can't bring food or drinks, that's ok too, just bring a friend and come participate in a night of deliciously, decadent desserts and games!

Get excited! Tomorrow is our PSA fellowship time again complete this time with the wise musings of our friends from the Religious Life office: Lucy Strong and Lindy Vogado! It's sure to be a time of good food, fellowship, contemplation, and fun so bring a friend!

But wait, the good times don't stop there this week! You are also cordially invited to a dessert potluck, this Sunday, September 27th at 8:00 pm at Townhouse B5. Start thinking about something delicious you may want to bring because we will be passing a sign up around at PSA tomorrow night. Hello fellow PSA-ers!

(If it makes this email any more fun to read, you can try to read it out loud without showing your teeth or get your roommate to do it - that's what I did! And congrats to Jess and Ellison, our two "Pteradactyl - no teeth" game winners yesterday!)

Here are the announcements mentioned at the end of the meeting yesterday that you should have been taking notes for! I didn't take notes either though, so here's what I remember:

Most Important: GRANDPARENT'S DAY!!!! CALL, WRITE, DO SOMETHING to show how much you love them!

Also, this Sunday, September 13th beginning at 6 pm in the Senior Apartments lobby will be "Soul Feast". This is a dinner/discussion on labeling hosted by the Bluefish. Come out for some good food and even better discussion!

Tuesday, September 15th is a Campus-wide worship service in Edmunds complete with a sermon by Dr. Bryant.

All of next week SVS will be having a canned food drive to benefit Christ Central Ministries. There will be collection bins in Neville, Springs, the Administration building, and Templeton Gym. Feel free to drop off any cans or all those Ramen noodles left over from the block party that you don't really want!

This canned food drive will be followed up by a service day at Christ Central Ministries on September 22 from 2-5. More info next week!

(And I almost forgot) Next Wednesday will be another amazing PSA meeting, same time, same place!

First PSA Meeting at First Presbyterian!

Hello everybody!

This is the big week! No, not just the big week for Convocation and Seniors trying out their caps and gowns for the first time, but even more exciting, for our first PSA meeting at First Presbyterian Church!!!! If you thought the Scavenger hunt last week was fun, just wait for tomorrow!

Here's the plan:
Tomorrow, Wednesday, September 9 we will be meeting on the front steps of Neville at 5:30 pm to walk over to First Pres together. Once there, we will join the church community for a FREE and DELICIOUS dinner! Following dinner we will meet together for a time to get to know each other, play a few games, and discuss some hot topics as well as what to look forward to this year!

Welcome everyone! Tomorrow is our first gathering of Presbyterian Student Association to start off a year of adventures, relationships, and spiritual growth! First off: Adventure. Here's the plan:

We're going to meet at 7:00pm at the PC fountain between Neville and Richardson. You will recognize it by its slimy green shade. Don't stand too close.

We'll introduce what PSA is all about, meet some new people, and set off on an epic scavenger hunt to explore uncharted territories. Wear your running shoes... because we want to be awesome.

The scavenger hunt will finish off with an exciting surprise. You'll want to be there... promise.

Next week (Wed. Sept. 9) we will begin our regular meetings starting off with FREE dinner with our friends at First Presbyterian Church followed by our first PSA time of fellowship. Tune in later to hear more.

Dearest psa,

I'm proud to announce the annual assembling of the PSA glee club and chorale. That means we're all going to the PRESBYTERIAN HOME after DINNER WEDNESDAY to sing our little hearts out to the little old ladies and gentlemen who reside there. No practice or skill required. Quotes from last year's appearance include, "I want you all to know, this is the highlight of my Christmas." So don't disappoint. Come to psa this week.

This is the last week of the semester to COLLECT CHANGE FOR ETHIOPIAN SCHOOLS. We're turning it in on Thursday. So look under your mattress and stuff, because we don't want to let anybody down. Susan Rembert was spotted over the break stealing change from all family members young and old... so we expect you did the same.

I hope your Thanksgiving was full of all great things. (eating, lounging around, and good conversations) My family enjoyed a real treasure complete with haiku:

*Wednesday's dinner is baked potatoes hosted by the youth group. Bring a donation if you can. The church is doing so much for us, so this is really a small thing we can give back.

The only sad thing is that pancakes are out. That means 5:30. No Neville. But the good news is so good that life is pure joy. Straight from the mouth of a Bluefish... we're psa & we approve this message:

"Bluefish is going to be holding a Capture the Glowstick game tomorrow night at 9pm. We are going to meet on the steps of Neville.

It's gonna be guys against girls. The boundaries are the road in front of Neville to the front of Richardson and the front of Springs to the road behind Smyth. Each team hides 3 glowsticks. The rules are just like Capture the Flag."

PSA... tips for living.

1) Come to church with us Wednesday night! We're still meeting outside Neville at 5:30, so prance on over and we'll scurry down to First Pres for dinner and psa together! This week Jerman Disasa is coming to speak about Ethiopia. He's my favorite, so you should come.

2) Go to the beach! We know this wasn't highly advertised months in advance like we're known for doing, but it's a good idea anyway. Oct. 18 & 19. (weekend after fall break) Charleston PSA has invited the whole state to romp around on the beach & then go to a low country broil together. The price is whatever we pay for gas and meals while we're there. If you're interested email or talk to Jen (jdrembert@presby.edu) by say, ummm... Thursday.

3) Eat a pancake. Maybe. We'll let you know if we're going to be offering that tasty option next Wednesday. More information to come!

4) Take a nap.

5) Read the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

PSA!! Guess what? Nehemiah is the 16th book of the Bible. Five of Jesus's disciple's names started with a J. Beth is a girl scout leader. PC started in 1880. This great knowledge of your's might come in handy Wednesday night at PSA. There will be Bible/psa Jeopardy, and I'm not taking any chances by failing to brush up on my knowledge. So meet. 5:30. Neville steps. Onward to First Pres. we will march for our free dinner and trivial extravaganza! Also, if you plan on meeting us there, dinner this week is in clc. (where we meet for psa).

Other news includes these hot announcements:

1) Martha came to us the other night and told us about a project she's doing to help support education in Ethiopian. So, she's coming Wednesday to tell us more about that. Start pooling your spare change.

2) Freshmen elections Wed. night! Nominees (Hannah, Amanda, Kelly, and Ali) should come ready to tell us why they want to be part of our officer team. We can't wait for them to join us!

3) Nov 21-23 is still our retreat!

In honor o' talk like a pirate day (which I missed) I be havin' translated this email fer yer enjoyment. These be some things ye ortin' ta know about PSA:

1) We still meet on Wed. night at 5:30 in fore o' Neville t' skip t' First P together. (or at 5:45 fer dinner at th' church) Dr. Gustafson speakin' this week.

TOMORROW!!
PSA is back again tomorrow (Wed) just like last week. Except, you can expect it to just keep getting better and better. We're still haveing free dinner & there will be games, music, and Herb Codington is our special guest speaker. Let's meet again at 5:30 in front of Neville to walk together. Or you can meet us at 5:45 at First Pres's fellowship hall.

STATEWIDE RETREAT! Sept. 26-28
All right folks, we have to make decisions soon about statewide. Your answer should be, "Yes, of course I will come!" The retreat is at Camp Pee Dee with psa's from all over the state, and the theme is STOP. LISTEN. RESPOND. We're going to have wonderful music and be experiencing different ways of listening to God, through music, Taize, art, journaling, drama, nature, and fellowship. Also, for the leisure side, there will be free time with a pool, probably some frisbee, a movie night on Saturday, and a riveting game of Capture the flag.
*You need to sign up by early next week. (Sunday or Monday) We'll tell you a price on Wed. night.

RETREAT TO MONTREAT!! Nov-21-23
Another great retreat opportunity... this time just with our psa, and we're going to your favorite place... MONTREAT! We'll be staying in a super Montreat house & retreating together all weekend, playing, worshiping, cooking, making fires, climbing mountains. Let us know if you're interested, and the good news is cost will be very low.

The theme for PSA for the 2008-2009 year is....
Recognizing Christ!

Based initially in Luke 24:13-35, the road to emmaus, we want to focus on how we recognize Christ in our lives. Whether that is at church, in each other, in a favorite activity, or in ourselves. We will touch on a variety of subjects that could broaden your views on religion, Christianity, and Christ himself. We, your officers, are very excited about this coming year and the opportunities that come with it.

Just to tell you a bit about the site...
- This is where you can find any info about PSA at PC online.
- Here we will post:
- our weekly emails
- photos from retreats
- bios of the officers
- we even have a calendar!

the links to the calendar, photos, and bios will all be found on the right side of the page as well as an archive of old posts in case you wanted to check on an old email! We hope that this website will become something that will be regularly used by many PSA goers and other students. Once the year starts, there will be more and more here that should be of interest, so be sure to check back often!

If you ever lose our website name, it will be at the end of each PSA email you get every week, and I'm sure any of the officers would be happy to give it to you as well :)
